Pastoral Visit of Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich to the Midwest
July 29 – August 14, 2022
Today, Luxembourg is a prosperous country known worldwide for its financial center. Before that, in the 20th century, it was the steel industry that made the country and its inhabitants wealthy.
However, before these times, at the beginning of the 19th century, Luxembourg was a peasant state which suffered greatly from crop failure and disease.
So many Luxembourg families emigrated to the “New World” and hoped for a better and carefree life there.
Many of them came through acquaintances to Chicago and from there to the Midwest.
Today their descendants live there in the 4th, 5th generation and are proud of their ancestors who dared to leave a small country called Luxembourg.
Quite a few of them have visited Luxembourg not for the first time and not for the farthest and always like to come to Luxembourg on many occasions to get to know and love the country and the culture in the heart of Europe.
Out of this friendship it comes also that:
“This little nation about the size of Rhode Island, sent its bishops […] in 1901, 1965, 1975, and an archbishop in 2000 and 2007. But this is the first time the country’s only cardinal has made such a visit, which is part of a Midwest tour […]” – Chicago Tribune – The Beacon-News Aurora, Wednesday, July 27, 2022
Thus, Jean-Claude Cardinal Hollerich will visit the following stops, among others:
Chicago, Illinois
Aurora, Illinois
St. Donatus/Dubuque, Iowa
New Ulm/Sleepy Eye, Minnesota
La Crosse, Wisconsin
Belgium/Port Washington, Wisconsin
